Storm Update

From Councilmember Freddie King:

Good morning All,

I pray that all is well. As you know parts of Algiers were severely damaged in yesterday’s storm, thankfully there were no serious injuries.

Our office along with Captain Contreras, Chief Ferguson, Constable Edwin Shorty, and State Representative Delisha Boyd walked the McClendonville neighborhood. We had the opportunity to assess the damage and speak to business owners and residents who were affected. We also patrolled Old Algiers and Algiers Point as those neighborhoods were without power last night. Currently 700 Algiers residents are without power.

This morning I spoke with the Sanitation Department and they are beginning the cleaning process, but fallen power lines will present a challenge.

Our office along with SBA will do a joint tour of the damaged area this morning. I will provide more details as I receive them.

Our office has been in touch with the mayor’s office. The mayor will hold a press conference later today to update everyone on the situation.

Please share this information with your neighbors.

Thank you,

Freddie King III

Lakewood Development Meeting – Nov. 30, 2022

My company, Stoa Group, is purchasing a piece of land on General De Gaulle Drive in front of the Lakewood Golf Course. We’re planning on developing a new mixed-use complex with multi-family residential and retail uses. This would be a high-end residential development with opportunity to bring great retail options for the area. The leasing office will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 AM – 6 PM, 10 AM- 6 PM on Wednesdays, and 1 PM to 2 PM Sunday.

The site is located in a C-1 Commercial District, where retail is allowed, but multi-family is not according to Article 15, Section 1.A (Table 15-1) of the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. Therefore, we are applying for a zoning change to a SMU, Suburban Mixed-Use District in order to include both multi-family and retail together. The site will include three-story residential structure with a combined square footage of approximately 490,000 square feet and approximately 273,000 square feet for retail along the street. On-street and surface lot parking will be provided, and no variance or waivers are required.

I wanted to reach out to you directly and let you know we’re holding a meeting where you and neighbors in the area can learn more about what we propose, and present questions or concerns. Our application has to be heard by the City Planning Commission and the City Council and we are required to do this before we submit our application to the City Planning Commission.

The meeting will take place: Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, at 5:00 PM at the Lakewood Golf Course Clubhouse located at 4801 General De Gaulle Dr.

If you have additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at 504-655-7114 or astuart@stoagroup.com. I’ve cc’d our Director of Development, Prescott Bailey. He will be reaching out to you as well.

Thank you.
