Headline: Library Hosts Program to Change Eating Lifestyle

The Algiers Regional Library of the New Orleans Public Library will host “Beneath the Weight” on Wednesdays, November 2, 9, and 16. The program is a series of three weekly workshops. Each workshop starts at 5:30 pm and ends at 7:30 pm, and covers different topics each week. The workshops are free and open to the public.

Beneath the Weight is a new approach for weight-challenged individuals who are ready to change their current eating lifestyles and to end using food to manage stress, moods, and emotions. The designers of the program are a doctor of psychology and a certified clinical nutritionist.

Participants do short thinking activities. They use information from doing the activities to work with partners and groups of participants who help each other to find and maintain new eating lifestyles. The purpose of the workshops is to enable participants (1) to see how and why they currently eat high calorie, high carbohydrate, and large quantities of food; (2) to change mindlessness into mindfulness; (3) to create new coping strategies instead of using food in response to stresses, moods, and emotions; (4) to be good to oneself about food; (5) to get in touch with the right-weight person inside; and (6) to prepare for success to reach the weight that they say is the right weight. All conversation are positive, encouraging, and supportive.

There are no lectures, no diets, and no exercises. The presenter is SelfCare Health Initiatives, an all-volunteer non-profit organization.
