Algiers Plaza Update – 7/31/2023

Good morning Algiers Community,

Algiers Plaza was recently sold to a California based company for 35million dollars. No businesses will be closing as a result of this sale, Winn-Dixie will be making renovations to its store.  The previous YouFit site is being shopped around for new tenants.

Our office met with the buyers’ representatives, and discussed the needs of Algiers. Some areas of need that were discussed were family dining, entertainment, small hardware store, etc. Please share this information with your neighbors. We will keep you updated if and when there are new developments.

Thank you,

National Weather Service (NWS) Issues Excessive Heat Warning in New Orleans Area

View as Webpage

Dear Community Members,

I want to inform District C residents of record numbers of excessive heat warnings issued for the City of New Orleans. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning in the New Orleans area for Thursday, June 29, from 10 AM until 8 PM.

According to NWS, 2023 has now surpassed the record for the most number of excessive heat warnings in a year. Only five excessive heat warnings were issued for all of 2022, whereas Thursday, June 29 will mark the seventh day.

The weather forecast indicates that high humidity levels will result in heat index values – that is, temperatures that “feel like” – up to 120 degrees on Thursday. Dangerously hot temperatures are likely to continue through the remainder of the week. The combination of afternoon heat index readings above 110 degrees and morning lows remaining well above normal will provide little, if any, relief for the body to cool for those without access to air conditioning or cooling centers.

These hot temperatures can become life-threatening if the proper precautions are not taken. Residents can visit weatherwise.nola.gov to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities.
