Algiers Evacuteer Training – August 8th

Thousands of our neighbors may need help evacuating if a major storm comes our way. Evacuation volunteers (Evacuteers) assist with New Orleans’ public evacuation option, called City-Assisted Evacuation (CAE), to make sure that our residents are safe and out of harm’s way! In this one-hour training session you will be introduced to the history of Evacuteer.org and what we do, learn how CAE works, and the vital role that our volunteers play in ensuring that everyone who uses CAE is treated with respect and dignity. CITY AND NOPD ANNOUNCE OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR POLICE COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD

The City of New Orleans and New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) have announced the open enrollment for Police Community Advisory Board (PCAB) membership. Open enrollment officially begins on Monday, July 30, 2018 for PCAB Advisory Groups city-wide.

The PCAB Advisory Group is a district-based participation structure that creates one 7-member PCAB per NOPD District (8 total). PCAB members serve a 24-month term. The group does not have any decision making authority, but will meet quarterly to achieve the following goals:
• Maintain a consistent partnership between the community and law enforcement;
• Serve to help reduce crime and enhance the quality of life for all citizens;
• Establish goals that can be accomplished through positive and open communications; • Assist law enforcement in helping to maintain police standard for accountability;
• Create processes to help address issues of bias-based policing;
• Improve interaction between police and citizens through education and training; and
• Strengthen and ensure the application of equal protection under the law for all citizens.

Membership is open to all New Orleans residents who are eighteen years or older and may be interested in serving as a volunteer leader in their respective police district. PCABs are creating the framework for a public participation plan with the NOPD to engage in a collaborative problem-solving process that supports both the community and the police desire to enhance public safety. PCABs are responsible for vetting community ideas/suggestions, working with NOPD to understand operations, processes and challenges, and building consensus on priority items important to the community before submitting recommendations to NOPD for consideration. PCABs are also responsible for assisting NOPD in recruitment efforts.

City to Host Paper Shredding Event as

Glass and Compost Collections Continue

NEW ORLEANS — On Saturday, July 14, 2018, the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation will host a paper shredding event in conjunction with Iron Mountain from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center located at 2829 Elysian Fields Ave.

Four times a year Orleans Parish hosts shredding days. Residents can bring up to 50 pounds of personal or sensitive documents to be shredded safely and securely by Iron Mountain’s on-site mobile unit. Iron Mountain accepts mixed office paper, light cardboard and similar materials. They do not accept plastic, compact discs, DVDs or metal (other than paper clips or staples).

The Department of Sanitation, in conjunction with The Composting Network, will continue to accept frozen food scraps from residents to be composted. Compost will only be accepted from private residences (not businesses). The Composting Network accepts fruit and vegetable scraps (peels, skins, pits or seeds), tea bags, coffee grounds (including paper filters), eggshells, nutshells, seed shells, plain bread, grains and plain pasta (no toppings). They do not accept meat, dairy, bones or foods with oil.

Iron Mountain and The Composting Network offer their services at no cost to the public in conjunction with the City’s recycling drop-off events.

On the second Saturday of each month, Orleans Parish residents can drop off:

  • Paper products including newspapers, junk mail, phone books, catalogs, office paper and color inserts
  • Plastics #1 through #7, such as water bottles, soda bottles, juice bottles, detergent containers, plastic pots from nurseries, plastic bags, etc.
  • Aluminum, tin and steel cans
  • Cardboard
  • Box board (cereal boxes)
  • Mardi Gras beads
  • Batteries (AA, AAA, AAAA, C, D, 6-volt, 9-volt and lithium)
  • Light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent)
  • Electronics such as computers, laptops, phones, televisions (limit 4) and microwave ovens (limit 4)
  • Tires (limit 4)
  • Glass (limit 50 lbs.)
  • Designated organics for composting

The Department of Sanitation has resumed the collection of glass. Please remove caps and corks before recycling.

Since the City opened the Recycling Drop-Off Center in August 2010, a total of 1,183 tons have been recycled. Since the current curbside recycling program began in May 2011, a total of 48,250 tons have been recycled. Properties that are eligible to receive solid waste collection by the City are also eligible to receive free recycling services.

NEW ORLEANS – Councilmember Palmer is hosting her first Coffee and Conversation with Kristin tomorrow, July 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Congregation Coffee in Algiers. Councilmember Palmer looks forward to discussing important issues within her district and listening to concerns from residents.

Coffee and Conversation with Kristin will be held monthly at different coffee shops around District C.
